The Creation Story
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the surface of the deep waters. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters, and God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. He called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”
On the second day, God created the sky by separating the waters above from the waters below. He called the expanse “sky.” On the third day, God gathered the waters below the sky into one place, and dry land appeared. He called the dry land “earth” and the waters “seas.” Then God created vegetation, plants yielding seed and fruit trees bearing fruit with seed in it, on the land.
On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon, and stars. He set the sun to govern the day and the moon to govern the night. He also created the stars and set them in the sky to give light to the earth.
On the fifth day, God created all the creatures of the sea and the birds of the air. He blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.”
On the sixth day, God created all the creatures that live on the land, including animals, cattle, and creeping things. He also created man in his own image, both male and female. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. On the seventh day, God rested from all his work, and he blessed the seventh day and made it holy. This is the story of how God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, establishing the concept of the Sabbath.
