Thumbelina Story
Once upon a time, there was a woman who wanted a child more than anything in the world. She went to a wise old woman and asked her for help. The old woman gave her a barleycorn and told her to plant it in a flower pot. The woman did as she was told, and soon a beautiful flower grew from the pot. When the flower opened, the woman saw a tiny girl inside. She was no bigger than a thumb, so the woman named her Thumbelina.
Thumbelina was a very happy girl. She lived in the flower and spent her days singing and dancing. One day, a frog saw her singing and asked her to marry him. Thumbelina was very frightened and didn’t want to marry the frog. She asked for help from the other creatures in the garden, but no one could help her. Eventually, she was forced to go with the frog.
The frog took Thumbelina to his home, which was in a pond. She was very unhappy there and missed her home in the flower. One day, a fish saw her crying and asked her what was wrong. When Thumbelina told the fish about her problem, the fish told her that she knew of a way to escape. She told Thumbelina to wait until nightfall, and then to climb up a lily pad that would grow in the middle of the pond. The fish promised to help her escape.
That night, Thumbelina climbed up the lily pad and waited for the fish. The fish came and pulled the lily pad to the shore, where Thumbelina was able to escape. She walked through the forest and met a field mouse, who invited her to stay with her for the winter.
Thumbelina was very grateful to the field mouse and stayed with her in her cozy home. But one day, the field mouse’s neighbor, a mole, saw Thumbelina and fell in love with her. He wanted her to marry him, but Thumbelina refused. The mole was very angry and threatened to keep Thumbelina prisoner forever.
One night, Thumbelina saw a swallow who had injured its wing. She took care of the swallow and promised to help him get better. When the swallow was well enough to fly, he offered to take Thumbelina away with him. She agreed, and they flew away together.
The swallow took Thumbelina to a sunny land where the flowers were always in bloom. There, she met a prince who was also no bigger than a thumb. They fell in love and got married in a beautiful flower. They lived happily ever after in the sunny land, surrounded by the most beautiful flowers in the world.
And that’s the story of Thumbelina!
