Ben’s mom was always asking, “Where do all your socks go?” Ben didn’t know. Every week, another sock disappeared.
One night, Ben heard a noise under his bed. Munch, munch, munch.
He grabbed his flashlight and peeked underneath. There, sitting on a pile of socks, was a small furry monster with purple spots. It had a striped sock hanging out of its mouth like spaghetti.
“You’re eating my socks!” said Ben.
The monster gulped. “Sorry,” it said. “Socks are my favorite food. Your stinky soccer socks are the best. They taste like cheese.”
“Eww,” said Ben, and then he started laughing. He laughed so hard he fell off the bed.
“Please don’t be cross,” said the monster. “I get very hungry.”
Ben thought about it. “How about a deal? I’ll give you one old sock every Friday. But you have to leave my new ones alone.”
The monster grinned a wide, toothy grin. “Deal!”
From then on, Ben’s mom never lost a sock again, except on Fridays. And every Friday night, Ben fell asleep to the soft sound of munch, munch, munch under his bed, and a little voice saying, “Mmm. Cheesy.”
